Every BC Home Rebate for Heating and Cooling in 2026: A Complete Guide

Quick answer: in fall 2026, BC homeowners can get heating and cooling rebates from four places: BC Hydro (up to $4,000 to replace electric heat with a heat pump, plus a $1,000 bonus on jobs paid by October 31, 2026), FortisBC (up to $4,000 for a dual fuel system that replaces a gas furnace at least 15 years old), the provincial CleanBC Energy Savings Program for income-qualified homes (up to $13,000), and BC Hydro community top-ups in some postal codes (up to $4,000 more). Federal grants for heat pumps are closed to new applicants. Most homes can only use one program for the main heating system, so the trick is picking the right one.

All amounts are official program maximums. Rebates can't be more than the paid cost on your invoice, and every program can change or end without notice.

BC Hydro rebates

BC Hydro pays up to $4,000 when you replace an all-electric heating system with an air source heat pump that heats the whole home, and $1,500 for a partial home system. For whole home, the heat pump has to meet 100% of the home's heat load at minus 5°C without electric backup, backed by a CSA F280-12 heat load calculation. The equipment must be on BC Hydro's rebate-eligible list and the NEEP cold climate list, and your installer must be a Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member. Apply within 6 months of the invoice date.

Until October 31, 2026, BC Hydro adds a bonus of $1,000 (whole home) or $500 (partial) for electric to heat pump jobs completed, invoiced and fully paid between August 1 and October 31. Applications for the bonus are due November 30, 2026, and funding is first come, first served. In eligible postal codes, a community top-up of $4,000 (whole) or $1,500 (partial) is added automatically, for up to $9,000 in total. Full details are in our BC Hydro heat pump rebate guide.

FortisBC rebates

FortisBC's dual fuel rebate is back for installs completed on or after October 15, 2026. It pays up to $4,000 to replace a gas furnace that's at least 15 years old with a new central ducted heat pump paired with a new high-efficiency gas furnace (95% or higher) and a connected thermostat. The system must be on FortisBC's Qualified Dual Fuel Systems List, the switchover must be set to 5°C or lower in the Lower Mainland, it must be commissioned on site through the DSMAlly app, and the installer must be a Technical Safety BC licensed gas contractor listed on the HPCN for this rebate. Condos and apartments don't qualify. Apply within 6 months of the paid invoice; processing can take up to 90 days.

FortisBC also offers a $300 two-upgrade bonus when you add another eligible Home Renovation Rebate upgrade. The dual fuel rebate can't be combined with other FortisBC, provincial or federal rebate programs. CleanBC income-qualified rebates

The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program pays the largest heat pump rebates in BC, but only to income-qualified households. Level 1 homes heated with gas or oil can get up to $13,000 for a central ducted or 3-head multi-split heat pump. Level 2 gets up to $7,000 and Level 3 up to $3,500. Electric-heated homes can get up to $5,000 at Level 1 only. You need an eligibility code before work starts, your BC Assessment value must be under $1,200,000 (Levels 1 and 2) or $1,820,000 (Level 3), and the install has to be done by an ESP Registered Contractor. Water heater, panel, ventilation and envelope upgrades

• Heat pump water heaters: ESP pays up to $3,500 to replace a gas, propane or oil tank, and up to $3,500 (Level 1) or $2,800 (Level 2) to replace an electric tank. BC Hydro and FortisBC also have water heater rebates for non-income households; check their pages for current amounts.
• Electrical service upgrade: ESP pays up to $5,000 (Level 1), $3,500 (Level 2) or $1,500 (Level 3) when you switch from fossil fuel heat to a heat pump.
• Ventilation and health and safety: ESP add-ons for heat or energy recovery ventilators, bathroom fans, and mould or pest fixes, paid only alongside a heat pump, water heater, insulation or window upgrade.
• Insulation, windows and doors: BC Hydro and FortisBC still offer these under the Home Renovation Rebate. ESP changed its insulation and window rebates on July 6, 2026, so check betterhomesbc.ca for what's left.

Stacking rules: what you can and can't combine

This is where most homeowners lose money. The official rule, written into the ESP requirements and repeated by BC Hydro and FortisBC, is one primary space heating system rebate per home, plus one heat pump water heater rebate per home, across all of these programs: the BC Hydro and FortisBC Home Renovation Rebate, the FortisBC dual fuel and income-qualified programs, the CleanBC Energy Savings Program, ECAP and the Indigenous community heat pump programs.

Many older guides still describe a federal grant layer and big stacked totals. That's out of date for 2026. A realistic plan is: choose the best program for your heating system, then add the water heater and add-on rebates that program allows.

How to claim the right rebate in 9 steps

1. Name your current heat source: electric, gas, propane, oil or wood.
2. Check your income against the ESP limits. If you qualify, ESP may pay the most.
3. Check dates. BC Hydro's bonus needs the job paid by October 31, 2026. FortisBC dual fuel needs the install on or after October 15, 2026.
4. Pre-register if you're using ESP and wait for your eligibility code before signing for work.
5. Book an in-home assessment and a proper heat load calculation. Rule-of-thumb sizing won't pass.
6. Choose equipment on the right list: BC Hydro's eligible list and NEEP, FortisBC's Qualified Dual Fuel Systems List, or the ESP Qualified Heat Pump Product List.
7. Use a qualified installer: an HPCN member for BC Hydro and FortisBC (a licensed gas contractor for dual fuel), or an ESP Registered Contractor for ESP.
8. Keep the paperwork: paid invoice with a $0 balance, model numbers, permit number, heat load report and, for dual fuel, the commissioning sheet and vent photos.
9. Apply on time: within 6 months of the invoice for every program, and by November 30, 2026 for the BC Hydro bonus.
