What is a good AFUE rating for a new furnace in BC?

In British Columbia, all new furnaces must have a minimum AFUE rating of 90%. However, to maximize your energy savings and qualify for the best rebates from CleanBC and FortisBC, we recommend choosing a model with an AFUE rating of 96% or higher. These top-tier furnaces offer the best long-term value and performance.

How long does a high-efficiency furnace last?

A well-maintained high-efficiency furnace from a quality brand like American Standard or Viessmann can be expected to last 15 to 20 years. Regular annual maintenance from a qualified technician is the key to ensuring a long and trouble-free service life. This helps to keep the components clean and operating at peak efficiency.

Do I need to change my ductwork to install a high-efficiency furnace?

In most cases, your existing ductwork can be used with a new high-efficiency furnace. However, during our in-home assessment, our technicians will inspect your ductwork to ensure it is properly sized and sealed. Leaky or undersized ducts can significantly reduce the efficiency and performance of even the best furnace.

What is the difference between a single-stage and a two-stage furnace?

A single-stage furnace has only one level of heat output: 100%. A two-stage furnace can operate at a lower, energy-saving stage (typically around 60-70% of its full capacity) most of the time, only ramping up to the second stage on the coldest days. This provides more consistent heat and improved efficiency.

Why is professional installation so important?

Professional installation is critical for both safety and performance. An improperly installed furnace can pose a serious safety risk from gas leaks or improper venting. Furthermore, a licensed contractor will ensure the furnace is installed according to the BC Building Code and that all settings are calibrated for optimal efficiency, protecting your investment and ensuring your warranty remains valid.
