How often should I have my heat pump professionally serviced in New Westminster?

It is generally recommended to have your heat pump professionally serviced at least once a year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season or in the autumn before the heating season. This ensures it's prepared for the specific demands of New Westminster's climate.

Can I clean my heat pump's outdoor coil with a pressure washer?

No, it is not recommended to use a high-pressure washer on your heat pump's outdoor coil. The high pressure can bend the delicate fins, which can restrict airflow and reduce the unit's efficiency. A gentle rinse with a garden hose is usually sufficient.

What are the signs of a refrigerant leak in a heat pump?

Signs of a refrigerant leak can include a sudden decrease in heating or cooling performance, ice buildup on the indoor or outdoor coils, and a hissing or bubbling sound coming from the unit. If you suspect a leak, contact a professional immediately.

How does New Westminster's climate affect heat pump maintenance?

New Westminster's mild, wet winters and warm summers mean heat pumps work year-round. The dampness can lead to more frequent defrost cycles and potential ice buildup, while urban air quality might necessitate more frequent filter changes. Proper drainage around the outdoor unit is also crucial due to rainfall.

Is it normal for my heat pump to make noise during operation?

Some operational noise is normal, such as the sound of the fan or the compressor starting and stopping. However, grinding, squealing, banging, or persistent hissing noises are abnormal and indicate a problem that requires professional attention.

What is the ideal thermostat setting for a heat pump in winter and summer in BC?

For heating in winter, a comfortable and efficient setting is typically around 20-21 degrees Celsius (68-70 degrees Fahrenheit). For cooling in summer, aim for 24-26 degrees Celsius (75-78 degrees Fahrenheit). Using a programmable thermostat to adjust temperatures when you're away or asleep can further optimize energy use.
