Can a plumber install a boiler in British Columbia?

In BC, only a licensed gas fitter with a certification from Technical Safety BC is legally allowed to install a gas boiler. While some plumbers are also licensed gas fitters, a standard plumbing ticket alone is not sufficient. Always verify that your installer holds the correct gas fitting license before hiring them for a boiler installation.

What is the difference between a plumber and a gas fitter?

A plumber works on water supply and drainage systems, while a gas fitter is certified to work on gas lines and appliances like boilers, furnaces, and fireplaces. While their work can overlap, they are distinct trades with separate licensing requirements in British Columbia. For any gas appliance work, you must hire a licensed gas fitter.
