B.C. Is Running Out of Power: Why Your Home Needs Solar Before 2029
The Warning Signs Are Flashing Red for B.C.'s Power Grid
For decades, British Columbians have enjoyed a comfortable illusion: that our hydroelectric dams provide an endless, cheap, and perfectly reliable supply of electricity. That era is officially over.
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has issued a stark warning about our province's energy future, highlighting that energy risks are increasing in 2026 as forecasted demand surges and natural-gas-fired generation retires. The reality is that B.C. is facing a severe energy deficit by 2029, and the consequences for homeowners in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley will be felt in both their wallets and their daily lives.
The numbers paint a concerning picture of grid instability in British Columbia. In May 2026, the province hit a record demand of 7,600 MW, the highest ever recorded for that month, driven by early heat waves. Our system is under unprecedented stress, and the traditional solutions are no longer enough to keep the lights on.
Site C Cannot Save Us from the Deficit
Many homeowners assume the new Site C dam will solve our power problems. Unfortunately, the math does not support this optimism. Site C will generate approximately 5,100 GWh of electricity per year. However, B.C. Hydro currently has a staggering demand backlog of 7,291 MW waiting in its connection queue, which is roughly six times the output of Site C.
Because our domestic generation cannot keep up with our consumption, B.C. has been a net importer of electricity for three consecutive years (2023, 2024, and 2025). In 2025 alone, we imported a net 5,591 GWh, completely wiping out the equivalent of Site C's entire annual output before it even fully comes online.
This reliance on imported power comes at a massive cost. Across the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 fiscal years, B.C. spent nearly $2 billion importing electricity from the United States. Taxpayers are effectively subsidizing American power generation because our own grid cannot meet our needs. The provincial government has finally acknowledged this serious power shortage with the introduction of Bill 31 in October 2025, but acknowledging the problem does not immediately fix the BC power grid problems.

Rate Shocks Are Already Here
When a utility company spends billions importing power and faces massive infrastructure upgrades, those costs are inevitably passed down to the consumer. B.C. Hydro rates are already climbing, with a 3.75% increase effective for fiscal 2026 and another 3.75% scheduled for fiscal 2027. By April 2026, homeowners will see a cumulative rate increase of 7.64%.
These increases are driven by rising personnel and material costs, but also by a massive 22.3% jump in depreciation costs as Site C enters service. As the province scrambles to find the additional 3,700 GWh needed to avoid the 2029 deficit, homeowners should expect these rate hikes to become the new normal. Relying entirely on the grid means leaving your household budget vulnerable to these unavoidable price surges.
Solar and Battery Storage: Your Insurance Policy
With NERC warning of reliability risks and the province importing massive amounts of power just to meet current demand, the risk of blackouts and energy rationing is becoming a tangible threat. For homeowners in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, the most effective protection against BC Hydro blackout risk is generating and storing your own power.
A residential solar panel system paired with battery backup, such as a Tesla Powerwall, transforms your home from a vulnerable consumer into an independent energy producer. When the grid is strained during a summer heatwave or fails entirely, a solar backup power system ensures your lights stay on, your food stays cold, and your family stays comfortable.
Furthermore, generating your own electricity shields you from the compounding rate increases that are guaranteed to hit grid-dependent customers over the next decade. It is no longer just about being environmentally friendly; it is about securing reliable, predictable energy for your home in an era of increasing grid instability.
The Clock Is Ticking on Favorable Solar Rates
If you are considering solar as protection against B.C.'s energy crisis, timing is critical. The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) has approved significant changes to how solar customers are compensated for the excess power they send back to the grid.
Effective July 1, 2026, the current Net Metering Service Rate will be replaced by a new Self-Generation Service Rate. Under the new rules, surplus electricity sold to the grid will be credited at a flat 10 cents per kWh, which is lower than the current retail rates of approximately 11.5 to 14.8 cents per kWh.
However, homeowners who install their solar systems before the July 1, 2026 deadline will be grandfathered into the existing, more favorable net metering structure for a 10-year transition period. Waiting to install solar means leaving significant long-term savings on the table.
